Postal History of Indian Military Campaigns

Sikkim – Tibet 1903-1908
Publisher: Philatelic Congress of India & Army Postal Service Association, 1989

Hardback, dustwrapper, 144 pages + plates, dustwrapper spine a little sunned, spine-lean, in Good condition.

An excellent handbook covering the postal history of the Sikkim-Tibet campaign. Well illustrated, including several pages of colour plates. “The Postal History of the Sikkim-Tibet Campaign is most interesting, covering as it does, a period of 5 years beginning in 1903 with political manoeuvres, followed in 1904 by the long military march to Lhasa and ending in 1908 with the evacuation of the occupied Chumbi Valley. Moreover it offers an unusual example of the mingling of civil and army post offices.
“Besides providing detailed postal history of the Campaign, the book offers much useful information in its Appendices for researching postal covers – Roll of Officers, Table of Post Offices, Postal Rates, List of Stamps and Seals and many illustrations. Part 2 of the book contains a Table of Recorded Postmarks and their drawings specially prepared by Dr. Wolfgang Hellrigl. The contemporary Field Post Office Diary of the Campaign containing a rare day-to-day chronicle of postal work and problems on Field Service is reproduced in Part 3 in its entirety.”
