The Welsh Post Towns before 1840

Publisher: Phillimore, London, 1970

Hardback, dustwrapper, illustrated, x + 138 pages, dustwrapper rubbed and with several tears, in Good condition.

Fascinating postal history study of the posts in Wales from the 16th century to the introduction of the uniform penny post in 1840. Contains a detailed record of all known Post Town handstruck letter markings, with a guide as to scarcity. Nearly 1,000 separate marks are listed: the earliest , of Beaumaris and Cardiff, were in 1705. Drawings contained in the text illustrate the main styles of handstruck markings, including some which were unique; maps illustrate the development of the postal routes and also help the reader to locate unfamiliar place names. Long out of print, this remains the standard work on Welsh postal history.
