An excellent handbook covering the postal history, postage stamps and stationery of the C.E.F. - the British contribution (consisting almost entirely of Indian troops) to the international force sent to China following the Boxer Rebellion. Well illustrated, including several pages of colour plates. "The C.E.F. episode is a landmark in the postal history of the Indian Campaigns. The postal commitment lasted for almost a quarter of a century. Special Indian postage stamps and stationery were used with separate issues for the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V. The C.E.F. post offices in China offered almost all the important postal facilities available in India with the addition of some new money order services. The C.E.F. mail was carried by all the steamer mail lines between Europe, India and China and later even by the Trans-Siberian Railway. During 23 years of operations, an array of postmarks was generated, unequalled in any earlier overseas assignment. The C.E.F. records such interesting developments in the growth of the Field Post, that it has fascinated students of Postal History, Traditional Philately and Post Office historians in general."

A Trans-Siberian Journey to China

Publisher: Yen Ping Sei, Hong Kong, 2011.
Paperback, illustrated, 30 pages, in Very Good condition.
This book illustrates and describes a series of 90 postcards that were sent home by a Frenchman, C.E. Tanant, on a journey from Paris to Shanghai in 1903. The postcards have views representing the cities and different parts of Europe and Asia that Tanant passed through. The front and back of each card is reproduced in colour, and the messages written in French have been translated into English and are included. Tanant was a keen philatelist, and many of the cards have railway station or travelling post office marks, adding to the interest for the postal historian. Tanant also took trouble to use different frankings on his cards, and to experiment with different postage rates. As well as informative commentary on Tanant's journey, the postcards and the stamps/postmarks on them, there is also a double-page map showing the Trans-Siberian and Chinese Eastern railways, with the travelling post office numbers indicated on the various sections.

The fourth volume in this magnificent series covers the story of the mails to and from Canadian, British and Indian servicemen captured in Hong Kong, the US Marines and others imprisoned in China, and civilians of many nationalities interned in Hong Kong and China. The principal concentration of Hong Kong mail was to and from the two major POW camps, Shamshuipo, and Argyle Street, and the civilian camp at Stanley. Many examples are shown with various censors and directional markings to and from these and other camps, as well as a considerable variety of inter-camp mail. In China a relatively small number of POWs were held initially in Woosung and then Kiangwan near Shanghai. Mail from and to these camps is illustrated. The civilians were held in a number of Civilian Assembly Centres in Shanghai, Yangchow and North China and mail from and to these camps is illustrated. Profusely illustrated with more than 400 illustrations, mostly in colour.
