The uniform fourpenny post was introduced on 5 December 1839, and was intended as a stage on the way to a uniform penny post. In the event, the fourpenny post lasted only 36 days. This book explains and illustrates the 4d Post and deals with the various rates in existence at the time. It covers comprehensively the uses of the 4d handstamps in separate chapters dealing with England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland. The use of 4d handstamps within the subsequent Penny Post is also examined and the London District Post is treated separately. Appendices deal with the other charge marks used before the 1840 reforms, the 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the London Posts, the 2 that was the first hand-struck charge mark in the General Post and probably in the world, that of Montrose used from 1732, the Reading 4 and 5, the Waltham Abbey 5 and the Woburn 7.
